Project Details

Riot has been maintaining the League+ app to support League of Legends global success. However, as Riot grows so do the needs of our players. We have taken the core of the League+ app and rebuilt it as the Riot app for all of our games.

Evolving the app and Riot’s design system to think truly multigame required us to reimagine what things like news, esports, social, and profiles look like when all of our divergent brands live in the same interface.

We saw this opportunity to not only release an app that will delight our players but also bring Riot’s only mobile application to the same quality bar that our players have come to expect from Riot.

News Feed

The news feed acts as the home of the app. It’s where players can see all of the latest news from the Riot’s ecosystem. Near the top of the news feed we place a few social cards of friends in an actionable state. Offering players several ways to accelerate their path to a game.

The news feed cards are built to adapt to the needs of publishing teams. We established four sizes of cards to build drama for large announcements and create a living, changing experience.

Esports

With the global prevalence of League esports there is no shortage of content to be watched. The design for the esports section was focused on understanding the player’s preferred regions and serving them the content they care about.

The global reach of esports requires fans of regions in different timezones to be able to simultaneously know when there is a live game or to catch up on a game that happened overnight.

Social

Playing games is fun but playing games with friends is much better. Some of the challenges of our busy schedules is coordinating with someone to play with when you have time. Our social section promotes game status and proximity to play to help players know quickly if there is a friend they want to play with.

We designed our player objects as cards so they can manifest throughout the app and maintain the same functionality globally.
