Eternals is a meta game system within the League of Legends ecosystem. A champion specific stat tracker designed for players to showcase their unique play styles with our champions.

ROLES: Creative Direction / Product design / Visual Design

Project Details

Players that play League of Legends are no strangers to stats and game meta-data. It is a primary way to see how well you did and help highlight ways to improve. As we approached designing Eternals we knew we had to differentiate from pure stat tracking and design a more personal, captivating experience to excite players enough to monetize.

Early in our art direction phase we did several labs with multiple art directions and lore explanations and tested against a less thematic version of the stat tracking system. Our findings showed us that if there wasn’t a captivating brand / story behind the product players felt like they shouldn’t have to pay additional for stat tracking. However, if there was a compelling narrative players were excited about the feature and eager to engage.

We knew Eternals had to aesthetically fit into the Runeterra universe but didn’t want to reference the “Hextech Magic” art direction that the majority of the client leverages. To solve this we drew from art history and landed on the idea of ancient statues combined with celestial constellations referencing heroes of myth. Creating the unique visual language that feels simultaneously at home in the League client but distinctly it’s own product.

Color

Eternals colors were chosen to closely reflect established color paradigms in regards to League of Legends game play.

Eternals Categories

Eternals align to different aspects of League gameplay. Each statue is designed to reflect these principals visually and with color.

Eternal Progression

The Eternals statues have 4 states to denote progression. Starting with unlit, when a player hasn’t purchased the pass, to fully awakened.

This unlocks unique in game emotes that showcase the player has awakened all of the eternals for that champion.

There are two categories of Eternals, champion specific and common. These are represented by the larger and smaller statues.

Champion Detail Page

The champion detail page needed to showcase and celebrate the fantasy of eternals as well as be future proof for more series to be introduced.

Upon hover, a player can see a detailed view of the selected Eternal. This plays an animation and creates an exciting moment that reveals more stats and metadata.

Purchase Modal Rework

In addition to supporting the ability to make a purchase directly on the champion detail page we took the time to improve our standard store modal.

We redesigned it to celebrate our artwork and create a more immersive experience with multiple states that can be used across the entire League of Legends ecosystem.

In Game Experience

The major touchpoint of this experience is how players experience it in their games of League.

We iterated over many rounds to create an exciting experience that doesn’t compromise or detract from the competitive integrity that League is known for.

When a player kills you in game you can see their Eternals as well as the player who assisted.

Post Game Lobby

After a player’s game ends they land on the post game screen. We wanted to work Eternals into this already dense touch point.
